How popular are Osprey?
-airplanes, backpacks, companies, computers and helicopters all use the large raptor's name.
-IBM just named the fastest quantum supercomputer processor the 'Osprey'
-boaters worldwide are familiar with the Osprey, naming countless models "Osprey" - it was the No. 2 name for boats in 2022
-even neighbor Bucky's keel drive Shamrock is named Osprey
First spring occupant - Branta canadensis - this mother honker is staging a nest site. Up north, osprey platforms are covered with what looks like half a crab pot to prevent this squatting from occurring prior to the arrival of the nest's owner. Its removed when the osprey arrive.
An increasing number of these geese here in Maryland decide not to migrate the 1500 miles back to Canada to breed in the traditional spot for Atlantic flyway geese, ducks, and swans - the Ungava Peninsula in NE Canada. Geese can fly the route in 10 days!
Harriet's first egg. 4/9/2023 , Second 4/12 and third 4/15. Expecting chick hatch beginning May 11
2023 H & O update: Started spotting osprey 3/15. H&O glided into the cove on 3/24. First egg laid 4/9. Second 4/12 , third appeared after a thunderstorm 4/15, , the fourth was laid sometime between 4/16 and 4/18 . 2 chicks appeared 5/22, 3rd 5/26. 1 egg did not produce a chick.
The nest camera suffered an circuit board failure mid- June. Observations were spotty via spotting scope and intermittent camera availability. The youngest chick was too small to fight for fish bites.
2 Chicks survived the summer until the larger female pecked its nestmate to its final demise during any feeding activity. Ultimately, only the one giant chick surviced.
Nature is metal.
H&O departed 8/29. The remaining "BullyBird" occupied the nest until mid-September then departed for her migration South.
